As I was doing a lot of film projects and analyses this semester, I decided to make my final 2-minute opening sequence of a movie; I mentioned this in my previous blogs, but didn't quite elaborate on the idea or what the storyboard is going to be and when am I going to start filming.
In the beginning, all of these questions overwhelmed me a little bit, so I felt that I am not going to be able to make a movie on my own with the real cast, props and me as a DIRECTOR! And this is when it hit me, after thinking the idea through and learning useful things in Media Studies class, my final inspiration kicked in, so this week I planned how my storyline is going to look like. And this is how I entered my preproduction stage.
Thriller or something else?
This was a bit harder to develop because I was always thinking of doing something complex, and had an urge for my idea to be complex. Then, I finally decided I wanted to do a thriller. Thrillers aren't that hard to make, in my opinion, In this 2-minute opening sequence, I had to make a story that if anybody wanted to watch this movie, later on, it had to continue. It had to have further story development, rather than what I've only shown on the screen. I didn't want to make this short film a dead-end, that was not the point of this project. Below, you can see my planning process, and how from the 4 ideas I went to the final one that I am going to make.
What is the storyboard?
So, after I've chosen my idea, I decided to develop it more and choose my characters (cast).
This below would be my storyline. It's a pretty good idea, I think, because of its distinctiveness, which makes up most of the story.
I decided to have 3 characters: Tom, Harry and Dr Zara. Of course, there are going to be some minor characters in the movie like people in the bar who are either going to sit or stand.
