What is the Male Gaze?

Considering what I've mentioned in the previous blog about the representation of females in media, British feminist and film theorist Laura Mulvey presented a statement that society is dominated by a heterosexual male gaze.  This created the sexual imbalance in the symbolic order where the male is active and the female is passive. Women in movies are objectified and are represented through the eyes of a heterosexual male; this mostly targets the male audience and females on the screen are there to be observed, not to make any other meaning. The male gaze tells us how women look at other women, how women look at themselves and how males look at women. The idea of the male gaze can create a lot of insecurities among other women because they are not represented as beautiful as they think are on screens.  In the example below (movie- Women's Job) the way that the actress is represented is through the body and slowed down music, showing us how they are just observing her and...

What Is Collective Identity?

'A focus on identity requires us to play close attention to the diverse ways in which media and technologies are used in everyday life, and their consequences both for individuals and for social groups.'                                                                          ~ Buckingham, 2008 ~ The quotation above, from David Buckingham, is one of the famous quotations that tells us about collective identity and how is it represented in real life.  In media, every movie, tv show or a magazine has to undergo the process of mediation before reaching our little screens. For example, the movie before it reaches the audience; the  filter, camera choice, actors... have to be put together. Certain media representations are constructed by editing, audio codes which adapt music to the frame...

Storyboard Production Exercise

STORYBOARD TECHNIQUE The process of film production that I've mentioned above is going to be exactly my plan of working through my film project. However, this is not yet my final one. This one, that I am going to present to you, is just going to be used as an example of production techniques. So, take a look down below!  For a 1-minute movie idea, first I've made a storyboard template that consists of 6 scenes with appropriate descriptions and duration of each scene. I've also included some camera movements for better understanding and creation of vivid imagery how this is supposed to look. This short movie doesn't really have a script since it's about 1 character home alone. But this silence could be replaced with a non-diegetic sound that suits each scene (e.g. foleys-lighting, static TV, popcorn popping...) and diegetic sound, which in this case would be character humming. The next step would be production, where I would have to hire and find a cast to particip...

Research Into Film Business

The film industry is one of the biggest and most successful industries. Many years ago, America wasn't so popular and well known for its film companies. Europe at that time was the main film industry and has produced the greatest films of all time, as people believed. However, when WWI came, the switch was flipped, and America's film industry started to flourish. Soon enough, Hollywood took the place of the oldest film industry with the production of various film genres- drama, comedy, action and even musical romance. Along, with its main distributors, Disney studios, Comcast, Sony... How does the process of making a movie work? First of all, the film has to be produced and the production company takes the credit for making a movie. The main role in the movie production is played by producers, who have to turn story ideas into cinematic entertainment and target the main audience to make a profit out of their idea. There are 3 main production processes, preproduction, producti...
